iPhone: Now with 3G, A-GPS, half as expensive

screwed

In less than one hour, Apple managed to cut the resale value of my two first generation iPhones to less than $100 each. Ouch.

The new iPhone has 3G, real GPS in addition to its cell-based locator, and costs just $200. Sonsofbitches!

Do I want one? I have had my iPhone since December, I find it to be pretty much perfect, and the one thing I wanted to see was GPS. GPS is here, so yeah, I want one. I imagine I should be able to offload mine for $100, even if to be used as an iPod Touch.

AT&T to cut the price of Apple’s new iPhone

AT&T (T) is planning to put some extra shine on the even sleeker new Apple (AAPL) iPhone. When the 3G iPhone is introduced this summer, AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone sales partner with Apple, will cut the price by as much as $200, according to a person familiar with the strategy. AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499. AT&T and Apple declined to comment.

I want to say that I'll believe this one when I see it, but it is just too god damn attractive. I have with AT&T for years (well, with the company that keeps getting renamed and remerged and it is currently called AT&T) and we have two iPhones, so the contract shove is not that big of a deal. Plus we can still sell our current 8GB iPhones to somebody that wants to run them unlocked for at least $200 each.

This is of course relying on the reports that the phone will include true GPS. 3G by itself is just not enough motivation to ditch our first generation iPhones so early, and the slimmer casing is a non-issue, since we don't mind the size of the current casing.

Oh Boy

I just read in CNN that basically *all* Blackberries in the country are out of service. I don't even want to visualize how the DC Metro commute unfolded today with the hordes of Crackberry thumb-typists having nothing to do for the trip.

Cable Cut Fever Grips the Web

Are underseas telecom cable cuts the new IEDs?

After two underwater cable cuts in the Middle East last week severely impacted countries from Dubai to India, alert netizens voiced suspicions that someone -- most likely Al Qaeda -- intentionally severed the cables for their own nefarious purposes, or that the U.S. cut them as a lead-in to an attack on Iran.

Well, yeah! What's the web without some good, old fashioned paranoia?

They go on to claim that on average a cable is cut every 3 days, and that there are 25 ships (in the world?) that do nothing but fix cables. What I find the most amazing is the lack of people asking why the hell we still use cables instead of satellite signals.

AT&T wins 12MHz spectrum, US iPhone to get nationwide WiFi?

The US Federal Communications Commission has approved the purchase by AT&T of 12MHz of wireless spectrum that covers 60 per cent of the US.

AT&T bought the spectrum from Aloha Spectrum Holdings. The spectrum, in the highly coveted 700MHz band, covers 196 million of the 303 million US residents and includes 72 of the top 100 media markets in the country. Aloha acquired the spectrum in earlier FCC auctions and from other auction winners. This portion of the 700MHz spectrum is not part of the FCC auction now in progress.

I am ready to do the "who's your daddy?" dance but I want to wait to see how the hell this is going to work with existing iPhones.

Cue-in the haters: "OMFG? WHAT ABOUT 3G???? THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!"
